Kendrick Lamar And Jay Rock Share Inspiration Behind ‘Pay For It’

by 14h ago

Jay Rock delivered a powerful track last year with “Pay For It,” complete with a verse from Kendrick Lamar and feature from Chantal.

The track was featured in a Beats By Dre commercial and now Beats is taking us inside the studio with the two TDE rappers, plus producer Sounwave, to hear what inspired them to create the song.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

“It’s about overcoming trials and tribulations,” Jay Rock explains. “Because I come from the city of Watts, out [of] the projects where you’re a product of your environment, so basically that’s what it’s about — just surviving and overcoming.”

K. Dot added that he was vibing off of Serena Williams when he wrote his lyrics.

“I can’t really get in the studio without being inspired by something,” he says. “Serena comes from the same city that I come from, so I know the pain that she feels, I know the loss that she has, and that was my approach on the record.”

“You’ve gotta pull from that. You’ve gotta pull from everything that you hate about yourself, everything that you hate abut where you come from, and turn it into something positive.”

We’ll be hearing a lot more of that passion from Kendrick soon, when he drops his third album To Pimp A Butterfly on March 23.
