Asia Unites Against Poaching

Representatives from 13 Asian countries committed to immediate action to stamp out poaching at the conclusion of a four-day symposium hosted by the Nepal government in Kathmandu from February 2-6, 2015.

The Symposium: Towards Zero Poaching in Asia adopted five recommendations:

  • Swift and decisive action to elevate the importance and effectiveness of antipoaching initiatives and cooperation among all relevant ministries, departments and agencies within their borders, while at the same time strengthening international cooperation in the face of this serious criminal activity.
  • Adoption of the Zero Poaching Tool Kit and assessment of current antipoaching responses to determine improvements and close serious gaps.
  • Increase and improve collaboration as a successful antipoaching response is critically dependant on effectively engaging a diverse number of shareholders
  • Improve standards, training and support for rangers, other frontline staff and prosecutors.
  • Commit to identifying a Zero Poaching national contact point to effectively coordinate transboundary efforts to stop poaching.

Tika Ram Adhikari, Director General of Nepal’s Department of Wildlife Conservation and Soil Conservation, said: “Nepal was proud to host this vital conversation in Asia because we recognize that poaching is robbing us of our wildlife wealth, which includes tigers, rhinos and elephants. We cannot allow wildlife crime to continue to wrap its tentacles deeper into the region. Our individual efforts may win us a few battles, but we can only win the war if Asia presents a united front to stop the poaching, end the trafficking and wipe out demand.”

Mike Baltzer, Leader, WWF Tigers Alive Initiative, said: “This is the beginning of the end for poaching across Asia. WWF is proud to have supported this landmark meeting and is committed to be part of the new determined movement for Zero Poaching in Asia.”

Nepal was the natural host for the symposium having achieved zero poaching for two years in the past four years. At the symposium, representatives from local communities, protected areas as well as enforcement agencies shared their lessons lea

At the closing ceremony, Nepal’s legendary Chitwan National Park (CNP) also became the first global site to be accredited as Conservation Assured Tiger Standard (CA|TS).Despite the threats that CNP faces, the protected area has seen an increasingly effective management and protection regime. This further demonstrates the commitment of Nepal towards zero poaching.

Thirteen Asian countries participated in the symposium: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Viet Nam, Malaysia, Russia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand, Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Lao PDR. Partner NGOs and other organisations included IUCN, TRAFFIC, CITES, UN Office on Drugs and Crime, US Department of Justice, SMART Partnership and Southern African Wildlife College.

WWF co-hosted the symposium with Global Tiger Forum, National Trust for Nature Conservation and the South Asian Wildlife Enforcement Network.

The symposium provides valuable direction on tackling poaching in advance of the Kasane Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade to be hosted by the Botswana government on 25th March 2015. This meeting follows the London Conference on the Illegal Wildlife Trade hosted by the UK government in February 2014, where 41 governments committed to taking “decisive and urgent action….” through the agreed declaration.

Have One Direction Been Hinting At Zayn Malik’s Departure?

by 1m ago

I don’t know about you, but I can’t seem to fully comprehend the fact that Zayn is no longer a member of One Direction.

It just doesn’t feel right. I mean, I get it, Zayn wants to be a “normal” guy and wants “private time out of the spotlight,” but from now on, there will always be a piece missing (tear).

more: ‘Zayn Left One Direction, Holy Sh-t’: Your 7 Stages Of Recovery

Yet, Zayn must have been thinking about this for a while. Yes, he left the tour due to “stress,” but the decision to leave the biggest boy band in the world after five years probably doesn’t happen overnight.

So, that got me thinking: Have One Direction been hinting towards becoming a foursome for a while now? Let’s look at the evidence.

  1. Four

Their last album was appropriately (or not appropriately, depending on how you look at it) titled Four. Granted, it was their fourth album, but this is classic foreshadowing.
  2. Drama On “Today”

    NBC/Getty Images
The band appeared as a foursome for the first time on the “Today” show last November because Zayn was ill with a “tummy bug.” But things got weird when co-host Matt Lauer questioned if Zayn had a substance abuse issue.
  3. “Spaces” Between Us

    Embedded from www.youtube.com.

Fans will no doubt be reading into 1D lyrics for clues. I mean, hello “Night Changes.” But it seems like “Spaces” may offer a glimpse at what might have been going on inside the group. With lyrics like “Who’s gonna be the first to say goodbye?” and “The spaces between us/ Keep getting deeper/It’s harder to reach her/ Even though I’ve tried,” the song paints a pretty clear picture of a break-up.

  4. Zayn Never Liked Big Crowds

    Embedded from www.youtube.com.

In this bonus scene from their documentary “This Is Us” Zayn opens up about how ever since he was young, he’s needed “me time.” In this clip, he says, “When I was a kid, when I was in a room with too many people for too long and there was too much going on, I’d just go upstairs and sit in a room by myself. And just play with my toys by myself because I just wanted 5-10 minutes by myself.”

  5. Tour For Four

Earlier this week, One Direction’s tour rider was revealed indicating that the band had only requested four rooms. Now, we don’t know if this was sent out to stadiums and arenas before Zayn left the tour due to “stress,” or because of rumored couple Larry Stylinson, but it’s definitely some sort of clue.
  6. Zayn’s A Naughty Boy

    Getty Images
Producer Naughty Boy confirmed that he collaborated with Zayn on a track for his sophomore album, and also praised Zayn’s rap skills. He said, “I’m really impressed by him and his writing ability. I spoke to Simon (Cowell) about it recently and it looks like it might be a single.”
  7. Will We Still Be Mates?

    Embedded from www.youtube.com.

During a scene in their documentary, the guys sit around a campfire and reflect on their success. Louis says, “What’s mad is that one day we won’t be doing this!” Zayn then adds, “Do you think we will still be mates?” And they all agree that they will. Cue waterfall of tears, now.

How One Direction’s ‘Night Changes’ Eerily Predicted Zayn Leaving

by 15h ago

Now that Zayn Malik has left One Direction, I can’t listen to their music the same way. I’ve been mourning with Four ever since the news broke earlier today. And I hear little bits of eerie foretelling within every song. Were they preparing us for Zayn’s departure this whole time?

First of all, on “Spaces,” they sing, “Who’s gonna be the first one to say goodbye?”
Hint: it’s Zayn.

On “Change Your Ticket,” they sing “Don’t go, it’s not the same when you’re gone. And it’s not good to be alone.”
Just stay a few more days, Zayn. Just stay.

But “Night Changes” has got to be the most creepy. Sure, this song is about a romantic relationship, but it applies to band shake-ups too! Let’s walk through the chorus, shall we?

more: One Direction Fans Are Not OK Right Now: ‘Pray For Us’

  1. “We’re only getting older, baby”

    Embedded from www.youtube.com.

It’s true. One Direction is getting older. They’ve gone from being young teens trying to make it through a reality singing competition to worldwide celebrities. They were just kids, and now they’re growing up, making their own life decisions, GETTING ENGAGED… you know, adult stuff. And as we’ve learned from music history, boy bands don’t age well. With this lyric, the guys are super self-aware. Yeah, they’re getting older, and change is inevitable.

  2. “And I’ve been thinking about it lately”

Oh, have you been thinking about it lately? We weren’t thinking about it at all. We never expected this shake-up. We were all fine and dandy. DANDY, I SAY! It’s OK, though. They knew change was coming and they embraced it.
  3. “Does it ever drive you crazy just how fast the night changes?”

This lyric proves that things can change overnight. And as we’ve witnessed, One Direction were fully together yesterday, and today, they lost a member.

more: Zayn Left One Direction, Holy Sh-t: Your 7 Stages Of Recovery

  4. “Everything that you’ve ever dreamed of/ Disappearing when you wake up”

For many of us, One Direction was a dream — a five-year dream. Today, it’s a dream extinguished. With this lyric, the guys know that things won’t be the same.
  5. “But there’s nothing to be afraid of”

Here’s where they reassure us. Because, damn it, this is going to be hard. We still have Harry, Louis, Niall and Liam, but will One Direction be the same? Will their fifth album be good? Will they still make sparks fly on tour? We have all these worries, but 1D says “there’s nothing to be afraid of,” and that means everything is going to be OK.
  6. “Even when the night changes, it will never change me and you”

Because no matter what happens — even though we’ve lost a crucial member of our favorite band — we’re still the same. Cheers to that, Zayn. Who knew that One Direction would be the ones helping us through their own turmoil?

5SOS Just Did Something Super Mature And Adult And Stuff

According to a HOH’s site, the move will allow the Aussie natives to explore other areas of the music industry besides recording and performing: “We will be releasing all of our music through ‘Hi Or Hey Records’ in partnership with Capitol Records. We will also be signing our own bands and releasing them via the label.”

It also sounds like control was a motivating factor in the decision, as well: “‘Hi Or Hey Records’ means we can stay in control of our career. Things have gone pretty well with you and us running the show so we want to keep it that way…”

That ellipsis at the end — do I detect a subtweet?

Well, Lil B Is Taking Responsibility For Kevin Durant’s Latest Injury Troubles, Too

by 15h ago

For years now, Lil B’s curse has appeared to haunt Kevin Durant. Could the NBA star’s latest troubles be a result of that curse, too?

On Friday (Mar. 20), the Oklahoma City Thunder announced that Durant, the NBA’s reigning MVP, was going to be “removed from basketball activities” due to soreness in his foot, according to ESPN. In the wake of this news, The Based God was asked about his longstanding curse on KD.

“He’s still under it,” the rapper told TMZ; the feud started back in 2011, when KD criticized the Cali native’s music. “Everyone who disses Lil B pays for it.”

more: Lil B Has Plans To End Kevin Durant’s Season

What does KD have to do to rid himself of the dreaded Based God hex? That’s the question that has been asked since Lil B put the curse on Durant in 2011 after the NBA star dissed the rapper’s skills.

“All he has to do is meet on the basketball court for a friendly game of 21,” Lil B explained. “I’m passionate about my game, my defense. If he doesn’t beat me 21-0, he should be embarrassed.”

more: Beware The Based God’s Curse: Kevin Durant Suffers An Injury

When Durant first suffered the injury that continues to plague him, the rapper claimed responsibility. So, is curse the reason for Durant’s latest troubles?

There is currently no timetable for Durant’s return to the court. The team has announced that this might even end KD’s season.

T-Pain Goes In Without Auto-Tune On His New Track ‘Wait A Minute’

by 16h ago

We’ve all been waiting with bated breath for T-Pain’s new album, Stoicville: The Phoenix, to drop. Luckily, to hold us over, T-Pain is blessing with new music in the form of a stopgap DJ Drama-hosted mixtape, dropping next week. The tape will be called The Iron Way, and now we’ve got a taste of it, with “Wait a Minute,” featuring OG Maco.

If “Wait A Minute,” or the two other singles T-Pain released earlier this month from the tape, “Disa My Ting” and “Did It Anyway” are any indication, it’s clear that T-Pain is testing out ditching Autotune. From the tracks we can tell that instead he’s in favor of hard-edged street raps and in-your-face beats.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

Here, Pain goes into detail about his high life, illustrating all the luxuries money can buy over rowdy production. “Wait a minute, sh-t might take a minute,” he raps on the chorus. He goes on to describe his impressive interior design: “All my n—as got work, let it cook let it bake a minute/swimmin’ in the money, my crib got a lake up in it, indoor pool outdoor pool, all my bitches getting’ naked in it.”

At one point he slips into an Auto-Tune-drenched purr, but for the most part, his voice remains unadorned throughout the song.

The Iron Way is due out on March 26th.

Move Over, Eminem, Action Bronson Is The New Rap God

by 11h ago

When Eminem declared himself “Rap God” on his 2013 single, it was hard to argue. Arguably, no other MC has the verbal dexterity that Slim Shady continually exhibits on song, but on Thursday (Mar. 19), Action Bronson made a move for the godly title.

Bronsolino’s new “Mr. Wonderful – The Documentary” is meant to promote his upcoming Mar. 23 major label debut, but it actually has us questioning all that we’ve ever believed in.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

During the course of the three minute and 30 second clip we meet a number of people who pray to Action and hang his glorious image on the walls in their homes. “It’s like a religion to dust these pictures,” says one Action worshipper about the Bronson pictures that hang in his home.

This ‘Glee’ Star Is Kind Of Slaying The House Revival Game Right Now

by 14h ago

Can we talk about how Alex Newell is kind of having a moment right now? Because Alex Newell is kind of having a moment right now.

The singer, best known for playing Unique Adams on “Glee,” just released a cover of Robin S.’s iconic house classic, “Show Me Love,” in collaboration with Russian DJ Matvey Emerson, aaaaaaaaaaaand it’s amazing.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

A renewed interest in ’90s house music has been happening for a while now — Katy Perry’s Prism track “Walking On Air” is a prime example of how the house revival’s been integrated into the pop mainstream. And remember Kid Ink’s DJ Mustard-produced “Show Me” from last summer? That track actually interpolates “Show Me Love,” in case you didn’t know.

But Alex’s talent hearken back to the masters of the genre — Robin S., CeCe Peniston, Martha Wash — in a way I haven’t quite heard in this wave of house revival. It takes a certain kind of vocal excellence to produce ballad-level vocals over a frenetic dance beat, and Newell has totally got it.

For further proof of his flawlessness, not that you need it I hope, check out his Blonde collaboration, “All Cried Out,” from earlier this year.

Yikes, Run The Jewels Were Attacked Onstage At SXSW

by 12h ago

Run the Jewels’ Killer Mike and El-P love their fans, but when they’re performing live, they’d prefer if the audience stayed off stage.

Apparently, the guy who hopped onstage Monday (Mar. 16) and tried to attack the duo during their SXSW performance didn’t get the memo.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

Viral video footage of the incident, which took place at the SXSW Spotify House, shows the would-be assailant brushing past Killer Mike and going for El-P.

Once security got wind of what was going on, they quickly dismantled the random intruder and ushered him off stage and out of the area.

Killer Mike, of course, had some choice parting words for the stage crasher.

“Get the f–k outta here, bitch ass!” he said before resuming the show.

Surprisingly, the man was not arrested because police did not see the attempted assault.

El-P took to Twitter later to explain what happened in greater detail.

Hear The 2Pac Interview Used By Kendrick Lamar On ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’

by 9h ago

When Kendrick Lamar sat down to craft To Pimp A Butterfly’s closing track, “Mortal Man,” the Compton MC decided to include portions of a 2Pac interview.

The song ends up sounding like an interview between an inquisitive K. Dot and a wise mentor in ‘Pac. But of course, the interview never really took place, despite what we all may want to believe. So, where did those ‘Pac quotes come from?

Kanye West Says This Is The Official Video For ‘All Day’

If you’re like us, you’ve been patiently waiting for Kanye West‘s “All Day” music video since the moment you heard the track.

Earlier this month, we even got a sneak peek of the video thanks to fans who attended a private screening in Paris. But it looks like we won’t be getting that Steve McQueen-directed video after all.

Instead, it looks like the “official” video will actually be the BRIT Awards performance we saw in February; you know, the one that had Taylor Swift turnt. At least that’s what Kanye said in a tweet that was posted Monday (March 16).

Grimes And Bleachers Just Dropped Your Quarter-Life Crisis Anthem

by 13h ago

When I was 22, I told a 27-year-old I’d just met that “27 or 28 is the age when you’ve got everything figured out.” Oh, to be that young, dumb, and naïve again, before the low-key bimonthly quarter-life crises set in — a problem that Grimes and Bleachers explore on their new song together.

“Entropy” finds the two artists, a.k.a. Claire Boucher and Jack Antonoff, contemplating their past and present selves and passions lost and found over some gentle acoustic backing.

The New York Daily News is reporting that 50 will be in court in June in what has been a long-standing battle between the rapper and his accuser Lastonia Leviston.

You might recall that Leviston sued Fif for emotional distress in 2010 after the rapper reportedly posted a video of her and a former boyfriend Maurice Murray having sex. Now, it looks like the issue is finally going to be examined in court.

Leviston, who has a child with Rick Ross, claims 50 obtained the tape from Murray and then altered it by placing himself in it. He allegedly blurred Murray’s face, but not Leviston’s, and then released it to more than 3.2 million views on YouTube during the height of his feud with Rozay.

Leviston says the release of the tape has caused her mental and emotional distress. She even nearly committed suicide, according to the report.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin May 26, just before a two-week trial is set to take place.

Wale Teases New Collaboration With Kanye West

by 16h ago

Snapchat is an increasingly popular method for musicians to share bits of unreleased songs with their eager fanbases. One such artist is Wale, who recently sent fans a clip of a song he’s working on. What made it particularly snap-worthy? For starters, the track features none other than Kanye West, whom Wale has described on Twitter as a “real live genius.”

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

The clip isn’t particularly high-quality, but it’s easy to make out Kanye singing in his recognizable Autotune-croon. He seems to be singing, “You were just alright, you were just okay,” which may hint towards a theme of romantic turmoil.

The footage comes from a recent studio session in Paris, where Kanye has been posted up for the last week. There’s no official word on whether the song is meant for Wale’s forthcoming album The Album About Nothing—also rumored to feature Jerry Seinfeld—or Kanye’s much anticipated new project So Help Me God, which does not yet have a release date.

The Album About Nothing is due out March 31st.

In fact, this isn’t the only project Kanye and Wale are cooking up together: the two of them are currently hard at work designing new jerseys for Wale’s hometown basketball team, the Washington Wizards.

Listen To Kendrick Lamar’s Highly Anticipated ‘King Kunta’

by 18h ago

Kendrick Lamar just boosted the excitement around his highly anticipated To Pimp A Butterfly album with the release of his latest track, the funk-filled and much-discussed “King Kunta.”

“I can dig rappin’ but a rapper with a ghost writer, what the f–k happened?” Kendrick asks on the track. “I swore I wouldn’t tell, but most of you share bars like you got the bottom bunk in a two-man cell.”

“King Kunta” also finds a defiant K. Dot denouncing brown-nosing.

“Something’s in the water,” he rhymes. “And if I gotta brown-nose for some gold, then I’d rather be a bum than a motherf—kin’ baller.”

The cut, which Pharrell reportedly called “unapologetically black and amazing,” is filled with racial commentary, too. Of course, the song’s name is a reference to Kunta Kinte from “Roots,” a 1970s television miniseries that depicted the hardship and tragedy of slavery in America.

“Everybody wanna cut the legs off him,” Kendrick rhymes on the hook. “Kunta, black man takin’ no losses.”

“King Kunta” is the third song we’ve heard off To Pimp A Butterfly,” following the infectious melodies and uplifting lyrics of “i” and the complex and powerful message in “The Blacker The Berry.”

All of this is leading up to the release of the album, which is scheduled to drop March 23. Now we’re just counting the days.
