Watch Stephen Malkmus Cover Taylor Swift’s ‘Blank Space’ Surprisingly Well

by 16h ago

This just in: Stephen Malkmus is a Swiftie.

Yes, that’s Stephen Malkmus, as in the former Pavement frontman and forever indie rock god. What can we say — apparently 1989 was more irresistible than we ever realized.

During a performance for the Portland, Ore., kids variety show “You Who,” Malkmus and his band, The Jicks, performed Taylor Swift’s sleekly self-aware “Blank Space” as bubbles filled the room and hordes of kids looked on.

OK, so there are a few lyrical slip-ups (“I can make the bad boys bad for a weekend” being one of them), but it’s totally worth the watch to hear THE intellectual indie rock legend cap the song with an epic guitar solo and make declarations like “you’re my king, baby I’m your queen” and “darling, I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream.”

The Jicks keyboardist Mike Clark was rockin’ out…

…and so was this adorable little girl in the audience, who clearly approved of Malk’s rendition.

Now, if only Taylor would return the love by covering “Gold Soundz.”
