Taylor Swift Is Louder Than AC/DC — No, Really

by 4/25/2015

Not all albums are mixed equally. No matter how loud you crank the volume on your iTunes, each and every song you listen to has a baseline volume, making it louder or quieter compared to other songs. And a new study points out that Taylor Swift’s 1989 blows hard rock albums like AC/DC’s Back in Black out of the water.

An infographic published by Ian Shepherd at ProductionAdvice.co.uk compares a wide variety of albums based on their loudness and dynamics. Metallica and Skrillex top the loud list with their respective albums Death Magnetic and Recess, but Taylor comes in pretty high at number five—just above Oasis’s What’s the Story (Morning Glory) and several slots above Jack White’s most recent album Lazaretto.

Meanwhile, AC/DC, The Sex Pistols, Motorhead, and another album by Metallica take up the bottom half of the list, with high dynamics and low volume. This discrepancy comes from the fact that contemporary pop albums are deliberately mixed to be loud and grab attention. It’s an ongoing trend in the music business, but it is funny to see Swift ranked higher than a score of bands who were known for being the noisiest in their heyday.

Can you hear the difference between Taylor Swift and AC/DC? Stream “Blank Space” and “Back in Black” below and see which one sounds louder.

Ciara Just Dropped Two New Jackie Previews

by 16h ago

Ciara continues to tease as anticipation for the release of her upcoming album, Jackie, increases. This weekend, she took to Instagram to give fans two different previews of her sixth album, due out May 4. Labeled as a #JackieSnippet, each teaser included an original short video created by Jordan Taylor Wright of Taylor Cut Films.

In the first sneak peek, CiCi tagged the clip as #Fly and said the track was produced by Polow Da Don, who has worked with everyone from Nicki Minaj to Rihanna. The track sounds like Ciara’s usual wheelhouse of half-hip hop, half dance jam.

Embedded from instagram.com.

The second clip is the intro to “One Woman Army” and it featured images of marching band drum lines cut with women marching in military formation. The track was prodced by Harmony “H-Money” Samuels and written by Ciara.

We’ve heard a number of different tracks from Ciara in the build-up to Jackie’s release. And just last weekend she hit up Coachella during R3hab’s set to perform a remix of her new single “I Bet.”

Jay Electronica Dodges Album Question But Calls Kanye West ‘A Black God’

by 15h ago

Jay Electronica took a trip to Nigeria this week to reconnect with some of his family members, and he made time for an interview at a local radio station, The Beat 99.9 FM.

Let’s quickly get the obligatory album question out of the way, because his response to that was, simply, “You know we’re always expecting an album sometime soon, but anybody that knows Jay Electronica knows that that’s the wrong question to be asking.”

Fair enough.

more: Watch Jay Electronica Tease A New Song In Miami

Now, on to more important things, like his thoughts on artists like Kanye West, Drake, Young Thug and Big Sean.

“Kanye’s a black God, and we love him,”Jay Elect said. “Kanye’s a beautiful brother. We gotta be careful about anything we hear. We all got our faults and character defects. Kanye, as far as I know, is a beautiful human being. Very beautiful brother physically and spiritually.”

So beautiful.

Big Sean also got a tremendous amount of love from him.

“He’s one of the best out. He gets busy. And to be quite honest, a lot of Drake’s earlier stuff was based on Big Sean’s style,” he said. “I always felt like he took his style and ran with it. That’s Big Sean all the way. No shots against Drake, because I’d be a liar if I said I don’t like Drake. I know his music and songs too, that’s our brother too, we love him too.”

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

Even when he admitted that he doesn’t find most contemporary rap to be as potent as it once was, he still ended that on a positive note.

“Yes, it is dumbed down hip-hop. It’s not what I grew up on, but I would be a bold-faced liar if I said I didn’t listen to some Fetty Wap and Drake,” he explained.

“I know the lyrics to ’I’m in love with the CoCo’ and all that. Rap is poetry, and we come from the era of Rakim and Nas. That side of me can critique a Young Thug and these new types of people. At the same time, it’s young black people using what they have to come up out of an environment they’re in to better their lives and their loved ones.”

Warning: Ed Sheeran’s Next ‘X’ Single Will Probably Make You Cry

by 15h ago

Listen up, Sheerios: we have good news and bad news about Ed Sheeran. The good news is, Ed has announced his new single! Yay! The bad news is, it’s a song so hauntingly beautiful that it’ll probably break your heart all over again every time you hear it on the radio and see its music video.

The British crooner announced “Photograph” will be the fifth single from his Grammy-nominated album x, which dropped last June. Along with tweeting his excitement, Ed also teased the track’s music video, which he assures us is a “special one.”

My next single from multiply is Photograph. Wait til you see the video, it's a special one. Very excited

— Ed Sheeran (@edsheeran) April 22, 2015

The acoustic ballad chronicling a long-distance relationship is basically like all of the watershed moments from a Nicholas Sparks novel packed into a four-and-a-half minute track. Co-written by Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid, the song also has a ton of compelling and detailed imagery, like Ed remembering a stolen kiss “under the lamppost, back on 6th street.”

Ed’s latest string of music videos have been pretty epic, from the impeccably-choreographed “Don’t” and “Thinking Out Loud,” to the muppet-filled “Sing” and the Ray Liotta-starring “Bloodsteam.” We’re guessing “Photograph” will be a similarly stunning clip that incorporates lots of physical photographs “inside the pockets of ripped jeans.” Who knows, maybe Ed will even take a page out of his BFF Taylor Swift’s book by packing it with Polaroids.

While we wait for the vid to drop, revisit “Photograph” here and let Ed serenade you to sleep.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

YEP, there are a boatload of emotions happening in this song and they’re breaking our hearts all over again. To recap:

  1. There’s instant heartache right out the gate as Ed kicks off with a helluva tearjerker lyric: “Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes/But it’s the only thing that I know.”

    Tumblr
  2. Then we’re frozen in a state of empathetic understanding and agreement as Ed tell us love is hard but it makes us feel alive. He GETS it.

    Tumblr
  3. The goosebumps on our skin make their first appearance when the chilling “oohs” and piano come in on the bridge.

    Tumblr
  4. Ed assures us we “won’t ever be alone” at the end of the chorus, making us feel like we’re wrapped up in a soft, warm hug.

    Giphy
  5. The drums kick in on the second verse and now we’re really groovin’ here.

    Tumblr
  6. Our hearts quiver ever so slightly when his falsetto reaches peak height on the lyric “just hold me.” Now we want to hold Ed.

    Tumblr
  7. The strings gorgeously accompany Ed’s repeated pleas to “wait for [him] to come home” and we join him by internally begging the girl in the song to JUST WAIT, DAMMIT.

    Giphy
  8. We’re feeling all mighty and defiant as the chorus builds and builds, like we’re screaming on an effin’ mountaintop.

    Giphy
  9. Then WHAM — we’re slammed back into emotional vulnerability as the tempo screeches to a halt and Ed softly recalls his stolen kiss. Le sigh.

Cali Rapper DUBB Wants To Prove That His New Mixtape Is ‘Perfect Timing’

by 13h ago

DUBB has been releasing music and building his buzz for a few years, but now, the California native finally feels like it’s his time. With that in mind, he dropped his latest mixtape, Perfect Timing, this week.

The project, comprised of 14 tracks and featuring Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, Fred Da Godson, Emilio Rojas and more, is hosted by DJ Skee and DJ Whoo Kid.

On “Reverse Racism,” he touches on issues he feels are plaguing his community, mourning the violence he’s grown up with both at the hands of police and his peers. “How we gon’ change the world if we don’t change it within?” he wonders at the end of the track.

Embedded from www.livemixtapes.com.

Then there are tracks like “Middle America,” with a patented laid back West Coast vibe sonically, but balanced out by DUBB’s impassioned rhyming. “N—as dying every day, lord can you save us?/ I love you and I hate to ask for favors/ But I’m tryna find a way/ I’m tired of these wakes,” he fires off.

Towards the end of the tape, “Moments” gives the 28-year-old a chance, over feel-good production, to both reflect on the struggles he faced growing up in South Central, Los Angeles, and also treasure some of his recent success.

You may actually remember him from tracks like “Food For My Stomach,” off Game’s 2014 album Blood Moon: Year Of The Wolf. Last year, it was reported that he signed with the Compton rapper’s Blood Money Entertainment, but it turns out things were never made official.

“We cool; I don’t got no issues with him, don’t go not problems, but I’m not signed to Blood Money,” DUBB told HotNewHipHop this week. “I’m still an unsigned artist and I’m solo and I’m doing my own thing.”

Now, he’s ready to again stand on his own.

Shawn Mendes Is The Youngest Artist Since Justin Bieber To Nab A No. 1 Album

by 10h ago

The year was 2013 and Shawn Mendes was a normal high school teen in Pickering, Ontario, who liked to hang out with his friends and spend hours watching YouTube cover videos.

Then one day, Shawn uploaded a six-second Vine of himself crooning Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me.” No bells and whistles; just Shawn, his green hoodie, and his acoustic guitar.

Embedded from vine.co.

Now, not even two years later, the 16-year-old’s debut full-length album, Handwritten, has topped the Billboard 200 chart, making him the youngest artist in five years to hold the position. Wanna guess who held that title before him? None other than Justin Bieber, who accomplished the feat with his 2010 album My World 2.0.

Oh, how things have come full circle.

Handwritten is a huge debut for Shawn. The album, which was released April 14, has sold 119,000 total units and knocked the “Furious 7” soundtrack down to the No. 2 spot.

Needless to say, Shawn’s fans were elated at the news and promptly tweeted out their heartfelt well wishes.

Miley Cyrus Is So Stoked To Induct Joan Jett Into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

by 15h ago

As we previously reported, Miley Cyrus is inducting one of her biggest idols, ultimate badass Joan Jett, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Well, the institution’s 30th Annual Ceremony is happening tonight (April 18), and Miley is currently sharing her excitement via Instagram.

Embedded from instagram.com.

“F-ck yo Saturday!” Miley captioned this photo of Joan. “I’m spending mine with this f-cking BAEEE!!!!”

In true Miley fashion, nothing says “moving tribute” like nipple pasties.

They stuck Miley in room 420? C’mon, wayyy too easy.

Miley is just one of many giant stars set to appear at the ceremony in Cleveland: Patti Smith, Paul McCartney, Fall Out Boy, Stevie Wonder, and more will act as presenters. In addition to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, other inductees include the late Lou Reed, Ringo Starr, and Green Day.

Miley has been a huge fan of Joan Jett for a really long time, and it’s for good reason: after first getting her start as a teenage guitar prodigy in the Runaways, Joan embarked upon an enviable solo career, releasing countless hits like “I Love Rock n’ Roll” and “Bad Reputation.”

Also, let’s never forget that time Miley sang with Joan Jett live on Oprah. Seriously, #NeverForget.

HBO will air a broadcast of the Induction Ceremony on May 30th.

Here’s Why 5 Seconds Of Summer Would Not Exist Without Green Day

by 16h ago

By Maria Sherman

Ahh, the dudes from Down Under. Michael, Calum, Luke, Ashton — you know this pop punk boy band well. If it weren’t for one very vital band, however, they might have ended up just another group of Aussies — or, possibly, a barber shop quartet or something.

The band in question? The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame‘s newest inductees: Green Day.

more: Before They Were Hall Of Famers, Green Day Were Pretty Happy Being Losers

5 Seconds of Summer are undoubtedly GIANT ’90s pop punk fans. Without bands like Mayday Parade, All Time Low and Boys Like Girls, the four Aussie heartthrobs might have never met and started making music together. And at the heart of all those American acts is Green Day, one of the first pop punk bands to acquire international success — and the arguably the guys’ favorite act. Without them, your fandom probably wouldn’t exist. Crazy, right?

So, in honor of the iconic California band’s impending induction Saturday (April 18), here are eight reasons 5 Seconds of Summer owe a lot to Green Day:

  1. They Wouldn’t Know How To Play Their Instruments

At least that’s the case for Ashton and Luke. The American Idiot single “Holiday” was the first tune Ashton learned how to play — and the same goes for Luke. And, get this: They both learned the track on the drums! Somewhere along the line the singer annoyed his folks with the booming instrument and switched to guitar.
  2. Ashton Initially Hated Blink-182

Green Day and Blink-182 are the two bands that bridged the gap between the punk and pop worlds and often act as a gateway band for the pop punk genre. Without Green Day, who knows if Ash would’ve ever started listening to this music!

“I didn’t like Blink. I thought they were messy live and I didn’t really like that. I was a Green Day guy because the first DVD I bought was Green Day’s Bullet In A Bible, the live album,” the drummer told SPIN. “That really empowered me to be not just a drummer but a performer. It’s a really crucial part of why I wanted to be in a band. I got into Blink in the past four years to be honest. I just didn’t really like his voice when I was younger. I liked Billie [Joe Armstrong] better because he seemed to be able to belt a tune out live as well. I really respected that.”

  3. Calum Was Really Into R&B At First

In an interview with the New York Times, Calum admitted that it wasn’t until he heard Green Day that he started listening to punk.

“When I was younger, my sister was a big fan of R&B — Usher and Chris Brown,” he said. “I got a lot of my love for R&B from her. She used to sing all the time, and I used to wonder why I wasn’t as good as her. When I was about 14, I got on the bus, and my sister’s friend’s brother handed me a burnt CD that said American Idiot, and that was pretty much the first time that I fell in love with music. I couldn’t stop listening to it. I saw an acoustic guitar sitting around the house, and I picked it up.”

  4. ‘Long Way Home’ Was INSPIRED By Green Day

    Embedded from www.youtube.com.

It name-checks the California group early on in the song with the lyric: “Green Day’s on the radio and everything is alright.” Conspiracy theorists will also note that the song plays on themes similar to “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.”

  5. Their Live Show Was Also Inspired By Green Day

Ashton cites Green Day as a major influence, explaining that the band’s power comes from their live performance, something that he and the rest of the boys attempt to mimic.

“I’m more a fan of a Green Day’s live recordings. They’re so amazing,” the drummer told Alternative Press magazine. “I love that Billie can command a stadium. He and [Foo Fighters’] Dave Grohl have that power. I look at that and get really inspired. That’s the way we perform, a lot of yelling and sh-t. We want to get a toilet paper gun for the next tour.”

  6. ‘Social Causality’ Is Basically ‘Minority’

    Embedded from www.youtube.com.

Come on guys… you hear it, right?

  7. Green Day Found A Place In The Mainstream For Punk

Without that niche, 5 Seconds of Summer could never have found the level of success they did; the space had to be created and opened for them. That’s not to say the dudes from Down Under haven’t put in the work, but the idea that cute boys with tattoos and palm-muted power chords can break the Top 40? We have Billie Joe and crew to thank for that one.
  8. Also, Being Green Day Fans Gives Them Cred

    Embedded from www.youtube.com.

By covering “American Idiot,” both for their live album and for KERRANG!, 5 Seconds of Summer have proven that they’re not a boy band (duh) but a punk, pop rock act. It’s important that they sustain their underground fanbase while embracing their young (typically female) one, and they have… just like Green Day. Rock Hall here they come?

Green Day Doubted They Would Win Any VMAs — Now They’re Hall Of Famers

by 22h ago

Green Day was pretty confident in 1994 that they weren’t going to be taking home any VMAs (and they were right — not that they don’t have their share now). Twenty-plus years later, however, and they’re getting honored with a pretty hefty accolade: an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

more: Before They Were Hall Of Famers, Green Day Were Pretty Happy Being Losers

In honor of their new status as LEGENDS, MTV News dug up some fancy vintage footage from the Video Music Awards. In it, Billie Joe Armstrong proves that dudes in bands never really change as he talks about being on TV (“I don’t really like cameras in my face that much”), whether he’s looking forward to seeing fellow performers Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones rock out (“Nah, not really”) and his thoughts on music videos (“I never really realized how many zits I actually have”).

Check out that chunk of vintage gold above.

Hold Up, Did Young Thug Just Get Engaged?

by 14h ago

Young Thug is having a huge week: he just released his latest mixtape, the Lil-Wayne-referencing Barter 6, and announced his new record Hy!£UN35. Now, seems like he may have just taken another big step, though not in a musical direction: Thug may have just gotten engaged.

Thug’s always been a lover— he’s been with his girlfriend Jerrika Karlae for a long time, and his lyrics are often filled with romantic sentiment.

“I love you til death,” he rapped on last year’s “Givenchy.”

Nothing is for certain, but if the pictures Young Thug posted on Instagram yesterday are any indication, wedding bells may be in the air for the Rich Gang warbler.

Thug posted an image of two diamond rings, captioned with a message directed at Karlae:
“Will U? ? ?”

Embedded from instagram.com.

The next picture he posted seemed to answer his question— it’s an adorable snap of the two kissing, clearly showing off their new matching rings.

Young Thug captioned the picture “4LIFE!!!”

Embedded from instagram.com.

Of course, none of this is for sure— neither Thug nor Karlae have confirmed anything officially. Still, Karlae seems just as enthusiastic. She also ‘grammed the picture of the kiss, adding the caption “Please make it to where we could like pics more than once <3."

If this turns out to be legitimate, we have only one response: Yaaasssss!

This wouldn’t be the only other possible hip-hop nuptials to be announced this week. Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill might have also taken the next step in their relationship.

Guess Which Presidential Hopeful Is A Huge Nicki Minaj Fan

by 14h ago

We already knew that presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio was a huge 2Pac supporter when he was in law school, but recently, the White House hopeful let the world know what he’s been listening to lately.

“Electronic music,” he told TMZ during an interview. “I’ve gotten into it a little with David Guetta, Axwell and Ingrosso, Swedish House Mafia, those guys.”

more: 16 Things You Should Know About Marco Rubio, Who Just Announced He’s Running For President

“I’m still a Nicki Minaj fan,” he continued. “She’s very talented.”

When Rubio says he’s “still” a fan of Barbz, he’s actually responding to some backlash he received for talking about being a Nicki supporter back in 2011.

During an interview published by The Daily Caller in 2011, Rubio laughed when he was asked about the music in his iPod.

“I always get in trouble for talking about that,” he said at the time. “I actually have pretty diverse musical interest. So, you’ll find Coldplay, but you’ll also find Eminem. I got some attention last week for talking about Nicki Minaj and a guy from Miami, Pitbull, who’s an artist. I mean, look, I don’t let my kids listen to any of this stuff.”

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

His more recent acknowledgement of EDM comes after he walked offstage to Axwell and Ingrosso’s “Something New” upon confirming his presidential bid. The move wasn’t backed by the duo.

“Axwell and Ingrosso didn’t give their permission for this song to be used and don’t want to be affiliated with a particular party during the upcoming presidential race,” they later told Business Insider.

We wonder what Nicki thinks.

You Have To See These Classic Rap Album Covers Recreated With NBA Stars

by 9h ago

The basketball and hip-hop worlds have collided many times. We’ve seen NBA stars like Shaquille O’neal rap and we’ve also seen plenty of MCs, including Master P, show that they could hoop. We’ve even imagined rap stars as NBA players. Now, those worlds are coming together again thanks to artist Jesse Nuñez.

more: We Imagined Jay Z, Drake, Kanye And More As NBA Stars

According to Complex, Nuñez created a project in which he re-created classic rap album covers using NBA stars. “Part parody and part curiosity, this personal project was simply about fusing both music and sports,” Nuñez said on his BeHance account. And the fusion also works as a clever take on the players that are featured in each cover.

For instance, Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks star who’s often criticized for not having a championship under his belt, appears in a remake of 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Tryin’. His tagline? Get a Ring Or Die Tryin’.

Nuñez/Behance

Derrick Rose, a Chicago Bulls guard often scrutinized after a series of injuries, appears on the cover of Tupac Shakur’s All Eyez On Me, a classic album that turned 20 this year.

Nuñez/Behance

Rose and Anthony are also joined by Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers star who’s gearing up for his final year in the NBA. He appears in a remake of Notorious B.I.G.’s Ready To Die cover. That title was changed for Kobe as Ready To Retire.

Nuñez/Behance

When you talk about classic rap albums, you definitely have to mention Nas’ Illmatic. That cover was recreated with Steph Curry, a Golden Gate Warriors guard known for his precise shooting. For him, Illmatic became Automatic.

more: Watch NBA Player Stephen Curry And His Wife Act Out A Drake Lyric

He’s got a few more gems, of course, like J. Cole’s Born Sinner as Dwyane Wade’s Born Winner, and Dr. Dre’s The Chronic as Kevin Durant’s The Sonic.

With stars like Nelly, Drake and Wale closely working with NBA teams, it seems the hip-hop and hooping connection will remain strong.

Vic Mensa Finally Unleashes ‘U Mad’ Featuring Kanye West

by 14h ago

Vic Mensa has finally blessed us with his new track “U Mad,” featuring Kanye West. Blessed being the operative word here.

Vic performed the song with ‘Ye during show in London a few weeks back, and he dropped the studio version on his website Friday, Apr. 10, just in case you needed some juice for the weekend.

Embedded from w.soundcloud.com.

The high octane track takes the energy of Kanye West’s “All Day” to the next level, and finds the two Chicago rappers going trading bars back-and-forth, with Vic really holding his own against Yeezus.

Oh, and he really went for it, with lines like, “If she bad I’ma hit a bitch in the elevator like Ray Rice.”

So far, this is the second collaboration that (we know) Vic and ‘Ye have done together. The 21-year-old is also featured on Kanye’s single “Wolves,” which we first heard during his Adidas show at NYFW. He was also mobbing on stage when Kanye debuted “All Day” at the BRIT Awards in February.

Clearly they’ve got a good thing going.

Check out Vic Mensa on MTV’s “RapFix Live” below.

Watch Rick Ross Travel Through Switzerland In New ‘Phone Tap’ Video

by 11h ago

Rick Ross decided to take fans on a tour through Switzerland with his new music video for “Phone Tap.”

The clip is an epic mini-film that brings Rozay’s rhymes to life.

“Everybody watchin’, everybody tellin’,” Ross raps in the Ryan Snyder-directed vid. “When your days numbered, n—a, cherish every second.”

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

“Phone Tap” is a track off Rick Ross’s Hood Billionaire album, which was released November 2014. The project also included the K. Michelle-assisted “If They Knew” single.

The same month Ross released Hood Billionaire, he also took over MTV News’ office for the day.

Jhené Aiko Gets Sentimental In New ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Video

by 11h ago

Jhené Aiko gets pretty sentimental in the new music video for “Eternal Sunshine.”

In the Jay Ahn- directed clip, the singer re-creates a 2013 car accident she was involved in with her daughter, Namiko, and Namiko’s father. Aiko is a floating head, singing through the track’s heartfelt chords.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

Spliced in between visuals of the wrecked cars and ambulance on the scene are memorable sepia-colored images of her friends and family, including those of her late brother Miyagi, who died of cancer in 2012.

For the tear-jerking finale, the Souled Out singer dedicates the video to her brother.

“In loving memory of Miyagi Hasani Ayo Chilombo,” reads the dedication.
